ABOUT THE ARTIST

LUCY PETRIE:

Lucy Petrie Lucy's primary career is as a clinical psychologist.  In 2002 she read 'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain' by Betty Edwards.  Six months later, after receiving a small set of pastels as a gift, she began taking pastel classes and was accepted into her first juried shows in 2004. Since that time Petrie has won awards at local, national and international competitions.

Lucy was elected in September 2007 a SIGNATURE Member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA). This is the most prestigious pastel society in the U.S. www.pastelsocietyofamerica.com

Dr. Petrie was born in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State and has lived in many locations in the northeast. She has spent the last 30 years in Vermont.

WORK METHODS:

Of her work methods Petrie says, "The creativity in my paintings begins with taking photographs. I use the camera to frame an image and, once printed, re-evaluate the compositions. I've found that Photoshop is incredibly helpful for customizing the photo.

"In general, pastel is not considered a medium that lends itself well to highly detailed imagery. Traditionally the beauty of pastel involves seeing the strokes that make up the finished image. My work is non-traditional in that it is highly blended. I use gloved fingers to do the blending. In tight spots I might also utilize a blending tool that is much like a paintbrush except that instead of bristles it has a rubbery wedge-shaped end.

"When working I often wear magnifying goggles over my glasses to ensure capturing the detail - both in the photograph from which I'm working and the painting itself. I rarely use a finish spray as I think it changes the crystalline pigment particles' ability to refract light."
